Maryland Signs Compact with Two Liberian Counties
posted 5:47 pm Mon August 27, 2007 - ANNAPOLIS, Md.
Maryland signed its first sister-state agreement with an African nation Monday, joining two counties in Liberia in a compact to promote understanding and business ties.
The agreement with Maryland and Bong counties in Liberia means the two counties may send exchange students to the American state of Maryland.
Bong County Superintendent Ranney Jackson says they believe Maryland can help rebuild the Republic of Liberia.
Many black Americans in Maryland can trace their ancestry to enslaved men and women from West Africa, including the area that is now Liberia. Maryland County was founded about 1835 by freed men and women from Maryland during resettlement efforts.
Maryland already had eight official sister-state relationships established with states, regions or provinces in various countries around the world. The most recent was Brazil, signed in 1999.
