Family and friends are mourning the loss of a Virginia soldier who was killed supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

Neighbors are stopping by the Maurertown, VA, home of Pfc. Thomas Wilson to pay their respects to the popular 21-year-old soldier from the Shenandoah Valley. Wilson enlisted less than a year ago. He had been in Afghanistan just four months when insurgents attacked his unit on Monday, fatally wounding him. "It's devastating," said Wilson's mother, Julie Hepner, through tears. "He was truly a wonderful human being and I loved him very much."

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?"I don't think it's hit me completely and I don't think it ever will," added his sister, Chelsea Wilson. "I don't think I've ever going to stop thinking about him there's ever going to be a time when he's not on my mind."

Wilson's friends visited the family's home Wednesday to hang an enormous American flag. Wilson was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rdInfantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy.

Tragic, but he did die for truly defending America from terrorists. This is in contrast to the sensless deaths of our troops in Iraq who were initially sent in to stop the non-existant WMD from being used... then were were told were sent in to bring democracy to a tribal society... then finally we were told were sent in to fight terrorists which in reality is a civil war. Those lost lives are tragic beyond belief.
