D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty's deputy general counsel has resigned following allegations he lied under oath in a divorce case.
Garrett Lee was disbarred last week following charges by the D.C. Bar Counsel, the District's top legal ethics monitor. He was charged with gross negligence, incompetence, false statements and perjury.
The charges, first reported in the Legal Times, stem from a case Lee handled while in private practice. Bar Counsel documents accused Lee of jeopardizing his client's case by missing deadlines and ignoring motions for contempt, then lying under oath when he denied the errors. The client filed a legal malpractice claim against Lee in 2005.
In an e-mail to The Examiner, Lee declined comment. Fenty spokeswoman Carrie Brooks did not respond to requests for comment.
