(Sports Network) - American Mardy Fish easily won his first round matchup at the $475,000 Countrywide Classic tennis event on Monday. Fish, the sixth seed, had no troubles in advancing past Colombian Alejandro Falla 6-2, 6-2 in just 61 minutes.

A pair of Frenchmen moved on Monday, as Florent Serra subdued qualifier Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan 6-4, 6-1 in 56 minutes and Marc Gicquel drubbed American wild card Zack Fleishman 6-3, 6-0 in a blistering 50 minutes on the hardcourts at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Serra is rewarded with a second-rounder against second-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion? One other opening-rounder saw German Denis Gremelmayr ground Italian Fabio Fognini 6-4, 6-2 in 59 minutes. Gremelmayr will meet fourth-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the round of 16.

This week's top seed is American star Andy Roddick, while Russian Marat Safin, seeded fifth, is also part of the 28-player field here. The top-four seeds, which also includes No. 3 Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro, received opening- round byes.

Czech Radek Stepanek upset American James Blake in last year's finale in L.A., but both players decided against making the trip here this year.

The 2008 Countrywide winner will collect $79,000.
