(Sports Network) - One family member of a coach for the United States Olympic men's indoor volleyball team was fatally stabbed Saturday, and another seriously injured by a Chinese attacker in downtown Beijing.
The attack took place from the second story of the Drum Tower, a popular tourist site in downtown Beijing. It occurred on the first full day of competition at the Summer Olympics, which officially opened in Beijing after a stirring ceremony Friday night.
The family member's Chinese tour guide was also attacked in the incident, according to Xinhua, China's official news agency.

The United States Olympic Committee released a statement, but didn't detail the coach's name or which family member's life was taken.
A spokesman from the Beijing Municipal Government told the news agency that the attacker was identified as 47-year-old Tan Yongming from the eastern city of Hangzhou.
"Our priority in this hour is to attend to the needs of the family members, the U.S. Olympic men's indoor volleyball team and staff, and the entire U.S. Olympic delegation," according to the statement from the USOC. "In addition, the USOC is working closely with the United States Embassy, United States law enforcement authorities and local law enforcement authorities.
The United States Olympic Committee will make additional information available when possible.
