A young teen was shot while playing outside his Fairfax County (web|news) home Sunday night.
Police say the 14-year-old boy, who was visiting family in Herndon, was shot in the leg shortly before 10 p.m. in the 1000 block of Saber Lane. He was subsequently taken to a Loudoun hospital where he was treated and released.
Witnesses, who did not want to be identified, said someone opened fire from a green Camry that was rolling past a group of teenagers. The car then drove away.
Herndon Police are working with the Northern Virginia Gang Task Force to try and determine what's behind the drive-by-shooting.
"We don't think the boy was targeted, but maybe the group he was with," said Herndon Police Lt. Jeff Coulter.
Neighbors say the threats of gang violence have been growing again in the community, where a massive crackdown five years ago had been considered successful. Some residents say they are still too intimidated to walk alone at night.
One woman says she always asks for a family member to walk her the few hundred feet from her car to her home. "I get nervous when I see people here arguing and fighting with each other."
Police say the shooting may have roots in an argument that happened earlier in the day a few miles away on Elden Street.
Police have made no arrests.
