The U.S. owns hundreds of underground fuel tanks - many designed for emergencies back in the Cold War - that need inspection for leaks of hazardous substances that could poison drinking water.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency says Maryland tank sites include Hyattsville, Aberdeen, Salisbury and Baltimore.

The Associated Press has learned FEMA (web|news) has known since at least the 1990s that tanks under its supervision could be leaking fuel into soil and groundwater.

The agency says it knows of 150 underground tanks that must be inspected for leaks. FEMA also is investigating if 124 other tanks are underground or above ground and if they're leaking.
