(Sports Network) - Top-seeded Andy Roddick and No. 2 seed Juan Martin Del Potro both advanced on Tuesday during first-round action at the $508,000 Legg Mason Tennis Classic -- a hardcourt U.S. Open tune-up.
The former world No. 1 and 2003 U.S. Open champion Roddick beat six-foot-nine John Isner in last year's all-American D.C. finale and also titled here in 2001 and 2005. He made fairly easy work of Paraguay's Ramon Delgado 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
The red-hot Del Potro, who hails from Argentina, is riding a 14-match winning streak, having titled in his last three events. He upset Roddick in last week's final in Los Angeles. On Tuesday, he beat American Jesse Levine, 6-2, 6-3.

In other Day-2 action, Serbian Viktor Troicki drilled German Denis Gremelmayr 6-4, 6-2, American Robert Kendrick upset Spain's Feliciano Lopez (3) 6-3, 7-5, Eduardo Schwank of Argentina downed Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, Alejandro Falla of Columbia edged American Mardy Fish 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
In addition to the Kendrick victory, another upset in the day's action saw skinny Russian Igor Kunitsyn outlast German Mischa Zverev 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-2. Sixth-seeded Russian Marat Safin dropped the first set to Italian youngster Fabio Fognini 7-5 before he retired.
The 2008 U.S. Open will commence August 25 in New York.
