(Sports Network) - Top-seeded Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli retired, while second-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova was an easy first-round winner Tuesday at the $175,000 Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open, a hardcourt U.S. Open tune-up.
Bartoli, last year's Wimbledon runner-up, dropped the first set to American wildcard Jamea Jackson 6-7 (5-7), and was tied in the second set 2-2 when she withdrew because of abdominal pain.
Meanwhile, former Top-10 star Petrova pasted fellow Russian Galina Voskoboeva 6-3, 6-0 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. Petrova will face American Julie Ditty in the round of 16.

Fifth-seeded Amelie Mauresmo, of France, received a scare from countrywoman Stephanie Cohen-Aloro before also advancing. The former world No. 1 and two- time Grand Slam champion dropped the first set before fighting back in the second, and cruising in the third to notch a 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 victory.
Sixth-seeded Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak, a surprise titlist in Stanford last month, leveled Japanese Aiko Nakamura 6-3, 6-2.
In other Day-2 opening-round action, Ukrainian Julia Vakulenko outlasted Romanian Monica Niculescu 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, Belgian Yanina Wickmayer outlasted Russian Vasilisa Bardina 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 and American Vania King overcame Italian Tathiana Garbin 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
This week's champion will collect $28,000.
