A man from Afghanistan has been sentenced to more than 15 years in federal prison for his role in an international heroin smuggling scheme.
Mohammed Munir Anwari was sentenced in Alexandria (web|news) federal court Friday. He is one of eight people indicted in the scheme in recent years. Court records show 54-year-old Anwari, who has been living in San Francisco, traveled from Kabul, Afghanistan in May 2002 to buy 1.3 kilograms of heroin in Pakistan. He returned to Kabul, hid the drug in the lining of a suitcase and handed it off to drug traffickers.
The heroin traveled to New York and eventually to Alexandria, where it was sold. Authorities say Anwari repeated the scheme in August 2002.
