The school teacher shot and killed Saturday during a hostage standoff with police was killed by her alleged captor, 44-year-old Michael Keith Wilson, her ex-boyfriend, Montgomery County (web|news) police said. Police shot and killed Wilson at the scene, investigators said Monday.
The victim, 40-year-old Catherine Brown, was the cousin of Maryland Lieutenant Governor Anthony G. Brown, an official statement revealed Monday. Brown announced that he would be leaving the Democratic National Convention in Denver to return home and support his family in the wake of cousin Cathy Brown's shooting.
Lt. Gov. Brown's statement adds that, "I leave my fellow delegates with a heavy heart and I ask that everyone keep my family in their prayers."
Police say about 10:30 p.m. Saturday officers responded to a call in Montgomery Village and found Wilson and Brown in the garage of Brown's home on Vineyard Haven Drive. Officials say Wilson was threatening Brown with a gun. Officers were speaking with the man to calm the situation when shots were fired. Brown and Wilson both died at the scene.
Brown's autopsy found that the angle of the fatal bullet wound suffered by Brown indicated she was shot by Wilson, according to police. The number of shots fired by police and whether by one or both officers is still under investigation, said police.
The officers involved in the shooting were identified as Officer Sandra Moss and Officer Kenneth Moreau. Moss has served on the police force since 1999 and Moreau has been on the force since 2005. Both officers have been put on routine administrative leave.
Brown was about to begin her second year teaching elementary students at The Beauvoir School in the District. In a statement issued Sunday, the school said they are "deeply saddened," and described Brown as an "important person in the life of our school."
