The reality of a Metrorail to Dulles Airport is one step close after federal transit officials allowed site preparation for a 2,100 foot tunnel under the heart of Tysons Corner.
The work is happening near the intersection of Route 123 and International Drive, directly across from Tysons Galleria.
So far, work has consisted of markings on the pavement; it's a sign of pre-construction for the planned tunnel through Tysons. To commuters like Roman Airapetov, it's a sign of progress. "It's understandable it's not going to happen over night. We have to deal with it."
The Federal Transit Authority said the commonwealth can use its own money to lay the ground work for the tunnel, until final plans are funded and approved. "It's important that we do this preliminary work," said Tara Hamilton, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.
While plans call for the Metro extension to be above ground, the tunnel is part of the inner workings of the rail line. Local roads will be closed and sideways will be blocked, making it a challenge to get around for those headed to the two shopping malls. "It's just impossible to walk. It's not safe to walk. So, I'm just trying to find an alternative route," said shopper Julie Autumn.
Local businesses said they are keeping up with the latest on the rail extension. If the tunnel excavation starts, it will happen in the middle of stores, hotels and restaurants. "We can deal with it. Hopefully it gets done kinda soon," said store manager Larry Lawson.
Despite the FTA giving the go-ahead to start the preliminary work, it does not guarantee the expected $900 million in federal funding. The federal money is crucial for the project.
