More than twice as many people have been shot and killed this year by Prince George's County police than all of last year.
The number is also more than any year since before 2004, when charges of excessive force led U.S. authorities to monitor the department.
County police have killed seven people this year, compare to three in 2007. There have been two fatal shootings this year by police in Washington.
Mark Spencer is inspector general for Prince George's police. He warns against drawing conclusions concerning the increase in fatal police shootings this year, saying officers are meeting increasingly dangerous situations.
And Vince Canales, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 89, says the increasing number of shootings says more about the reckless behavior of Prince George's criminals than it does about police conduct.

PG County has had a reputation of excessive police violence and shootings since I was a teenager back in the 60s. From first hand observations and things that happened to friends, it was (is) well deserved. I had a neighbor who was a PG police officer and he used to brag about the people he had pounded with his night stick.
