(Sports Network) - Cincinnati Reds pitcher Edinson Volquez will likely be sidelined until late in the 2010 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on Monday.
It was initially unknown if the right-hander would need arthroscopic surgery for his ailing right elbow or the more severe ligament replacement surgery. An arthroscopic procedure would have allowed Volquez a likely return for spring training, but the Tommy John surgery for a torn ulnar collateral ligament usually means a recovery period of 10-12 months.
According to the team's web site, Volquez also had a torn flexor mass in his elbow repaired during Monday's 90-minute operation.
Volquez has been on the disabled list since June 2 after experiencing tendinitis in the elbow. He had begun a rehab assignment, but experienced stiffness in the elbow in a simulated game Friday.
After winning a career-high 17 games in an All-Star season for Cincy in 2008, Volquez made just nine starts this season and produced a record of 4-2 with a 4.35 earned run average. He was also on the DL in May because of back spasms.
