(Sports Network) - Australian Lleyton Hewitt was a first- round winner on Monday at the $1.402 million Legg Mason Tennis Classic, a US Open Series event.
Hewitt, the 2004 titlist at this event, had no problems defeating American Donald Young, 7-5, 6-2 on the hardcourts at the Fitzgerald Tennis Center.
Russian Mikhail Youzhny snuck past American Robert Kendrick 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 while Colombia's Alejandro Falla defeated American Jesse Witten 6-1, 6-4.
Germany's Philipp Petzschner dropped the first set, but won the next two to defeat Russia's Teimuraz Gabashvili 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 while India's Somdev Devvarman got past Japan's Yuichi Sugita 6-0, 7-6 (8-6).
Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei bounced back from a first set loss to slip past Michael Russell of the United States 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. Canada's Frank Dancevic won in straight sets as he downed Colombian Santiago Giraldo 6-4, 6-3.
Also, France's Marc Gicquel slipped past Poland's Jerzy Janowicz 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, and towering American John Isner downed Kazakhstan's Andrey Golubev, 7-6 (10-8), 6-3. Russian Igor Kunitsyn defeated Portugal's Frederico Gil, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4.
Argentine slugger Juan Martin del Potro, seeded second this week, beat Serbian Viktor Troicki in last year's finale here. Wimbledon runner-up Andy Roddick, a three-time Washington titlist, is the top seed.
The 2009 Legg Mason champ will collect $300,000.
