(Sports Network) - The Minnesota Timberwolves' exhaustive coaching search is reportedly over.
Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor confirmed to the St. Paul Pioneer Press late Saturday that the team had reached a verbal agreement on a contract with Los Angeles Lakers assistant Kurt Rambis to be its next head coach. According to the report, Rambis is expected to sign the contract Monday and be introduced at a Tuesday press conference.
Rambis, who was a finalist for the head coaching vacancy in Sacramento and interviewed for the same position in Philadelphia, succeeds Kevin McHale, who was fired in June. The T-Wolves finished 24-58 last season.
The 51-year-old had been an assistant with the Lakers for 10 seasons and compiled a 25-13 record as interim coach during the lockout-shortened 1998-99 campaign following the dismissal of Del Harris.
Rambis was a Laker regular alongside Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the 1980s, playing nine seasons with the club.
