Loree Moore added 10 points, six boards and five assists for the Liberty, who completed their five-game road trip at 2-3.
Lisa Leslie had a game-high 12 points and five rebounds to pace the Sparks, whose two-game win streak was halted. Candace Parker and Betty Lennox poured in 11 points each, with Parker pulling down a game-best 11 rebounds in defeat.
Parker had scored eight points to help LA come within 63-61 with 36 seconds left in regulation. However, Essence Carson drained a layup with 20 seconds left to push New York's lead to four and effectively wrap up the contest.
