(Sports Network) - Syracuse University in conjunction
with New Meadowlands Stadium Corporation announced Tuesday that the school
will play select home dates beginning in 2012 at the new home of the Giants
and Jets of the NFL.
The Orange will play USC on September 8, 2012 and face Notre Dame twice, on
September 27, 2014 and September 3, 2016. The scheduled home dates at New
Meadowlands Stadium are part of a home-and-home series with both schools as
the Orange travel to USC on September 17, 2011 and will play two games in
South Bend on November 21, 2015 and October 7, 2017.
CEO Mark Lamping of New Meadowlands Stadium Company and Syracuse director of
athletics Dr. Daryl Gross made the announcement in tandem on Tuesday.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for Syracuse University to be associated
with the New Meadowlands," Gross said in a release. "We embrace the
opportunity to play in the New York metropolitan area, which boasts our most
popular alumni base, to enhance our football program and University
objectives. As the only BCS team in the state of New York, we feel it is our
responsibility to represent this region successfully. The national exposure
and playing these traditional college football programs are exciting for us as
we look forward to re-establishing our own football tradition."
The new stadium is set for completion in 2010 and will seat 82,500 with 9,500
club seats and 222 luxury suites. Upon completion, it will be the third-
largest stadium in the NFL.
The Orange are no strangers to the Meadowlands, having played at the existing
stadium eight times with a 5-3 record. They first appeared there in 1979,
playing two home dates against Penn State and West Virginia while Syracuse's
official home, the Carrier Dome, was under construction. The Orange's last
visit was against USC at the 1990 Kickoff Classic in the Meadowlands.
Syracuse kicks off its 2009 schedule on September 5 against Minnesota at the
Carrier Dome.
