(Sports Network) - New York Mets outfielder Jeff Francoeur was not in the starting lineup for Monday's game against Philadelphia because of a thumb injury.
Francoeur was hurt in the ninth inning of Sunday's game when he made a diving catch for a ball hit by Eric Bruntlett. He stayed in the game and hit into the game-ending triple play in the bottom of the inning, but the thumb apparently worsened overnight.
An MRI exam was scheduled for Monday.
"From what I understand, it swelled up overnight," said Mets manager Jerry Manuel.
Francoeur was a key figure in the wild ninth inning. On the diving catch of Bruntlett's liner, the play was originally ruled a hit. Francoeur argued and umpires convened before reversing the call.
In the bottom of the ninth, Francoeur hit a line drive up the middle with two runners in motion. Bruntlett snared the drive for the first out, stepped on second for the second out and tagged Daniel Murphy running from first for the rare feat.
Francoeur joined the Mets in a July 10 trade from Atlanta, as the Braves acquired outfielder Ryan Church in return. He is hitting .305 with six homers and 24 runs batted in over 39 games with New York.
