I feel bad for the parents of the little girl but my question is this? WHy wasn't the father watching her like a hawk to begin with? When my son was that young, I never let him go into the pool without my husband or I being with him and I never took my eyes off of him. I don't want to brow beat the parents, they are hurting enough as it is, I'm sure. I have had problems with Lifetime in the past as well as the LifeGuards and have made a couple of comments before about them to management. They are all too young and are to busy worrying about who looks best in their bathing suit and where they are going friday night and quite honestly, when they do pay attention, they are to busy being on a power trip. They should have lifeguards there that are mature enough to handle being in responsible for so many lives. In my opnion, Lifetime as a whole has problems with hiring people too young to handle certain situations like the pool and rock climbing wall! I have complained before to coorporate and nothing has been done....hopefully they will listen now before another trajedy happens!

There is no excuse for this. There were lifeguards and parents. Someone should have noticed this little girl was under water! I've taken kids to the pool when babysitting before and never taken my eyes off of them.

we need to teach our kids to swim period. My son was swimming by age 2 and was even taught life saving techniques. Kids need to learn survival skills. I did not learn to swim until i became an adult. I made sure my son learned at an early age. I am sad for this childs family. No one is to blame. This was an accidental drowning that should have never happened.

I know the family of the little girl. Jana used to stand by the sidewalk of her father's store and try to stop my little boy from running on the street while I was standing right next to him. She had a wonderful little heart and beautiful curly hair and delightful face. My God bring peace to her family's heart and lives. My prayers are with her and her family. She wore her beautiful little outfit to be seen at Lifetime Fitness the night she went swimming. She did not know that was her last night on earth. She would have started kindergarten this year and I was told that her father was in the hospital last night laughing like a mad man because he could not bare the pain. Let us all pray for them! Goodbye little beautiful Jana! Goodbye!

I think the dad was busy looking at the EYE CANDY and not paying too much attention to his daughter

Eboy, you are completely clueless, not to mention insensitive.

They have lifeguards at these places so the kids can play and the parents don't have to be there. Not that I would trust these guys and girls with my kid, but I can tell you that sometimes they have 20+ kids there and usually only a handfull of parents. Someone really screwed up bad here, because typically the lifeguards aren't real attentive, but during the "family time" they usually are. In some case, they have two lifeguards standing and watching over everyone. Someone was away from his or her post.

In re to the "four-feet of water in a 'kiddie pool'" comment, that designation is from the news report, nobody at the club calls it that (to my knowledge, but then again I don't have kids and don't use it). It isn't just or even primarily for kids, but is also a leisure pool for adults who don't want to swim laps. It is thus called the "leisure pool," and most of it is only 1-2 feet deep, but the far end gets as deep as four feet.

It happens within just seconds. I know I had a couple of really close calls before I got mine in swimming class at a very young age. My then three year old ran and jumped in deep water once upon arriving at the pool forgetting he didn't have his floaty on and thank God a observant man saw him and swooped him up. We didn't even see him jump in. Then after overcoming his fear of the water he ended up being the littlest kid to get in line to jump off the high dive over and over again. The father is going through enough pain already blaming himself I'm sure. I wish he had had that kind stranger out of nowhere to save her.

So, why wasn't dad keeping a better eye on her? Also, four-feet of water in a "kiddie pool" ?!?
