The University of Maryland, Eastern Shore has confirmed that a woman killed in a five-vehicle accident in Talbot County was a student at the university.
University officials tell WBOC-TV that UMES President Thelma Thompson is planning to issue a statement later in the day.
The accident happened about 9 p.m. Monday night on U.S. Route 50 near Trappe. State police say an eastbound vehicle crossed the center line into the westbound lanes, causing the collisions.
A passenger in the first vehicle, 19-year-old Brielle Newland of Dundalk, was killed; eight other people were injured. State police say she was riding in a car driven by 19-year-old Jaquell Dendey of Gwynn Oak, another UMES student
The crash happened as Labor Day travelers were returning from the beach. The highway was closed in both directions for hours and traffic was detoured.
