Nannies Demand Fair Wages, Benefits

D.C. area nannies are looking for some respect. Domestic childcare workers say their working conditions and pay scales vary widely, so they're forming a coalition to demand some consistency.
The National Alliance of Domestic Workers is backed by the Hispanic advocacy group CASA of Maryland. The group is calling for a "Domestic Worker Bill of Rights" that includes minimum wage, paid vacation, sick leave, overtime pay and notice before firing. The group is focusing on Montgomery County.
A 2006 survey done for the Montgomery council found that live-in nannies generally are paid $6.29 an hour and that a majority "live-out" nannies received minimum wage or more.
But the vast majority did not get overtime and fewer than 16 percent had paid sick days or health insurance. Fewer than a quarter had paid vacations.
