Prince William Co. to Seek Federal Deportation Training
posted 4:33 pm Wed September 05, 2007 - Manassas, Va.
Several law enforcement agencies in and around Prince William County want their officers to work together to receive federal training in deportation procedures.
Officers at the Prince William-Manassas regional jail have already been trained to begin the deportation process for selected inmates.
Now, officials from the jail, the county sheriff's office and police departments in Prince William, Manassas and Manassas Park are proposing a plan to use the same immigration enforcement guidelines and have the same training.
Prince William Police Chief Charlie Deane plans to present details on the initiative this month to county supervisors.
Herndon police have also received Immigration and Customs training.
Immigrant rights advocates say if local police start enforcing federal immigration laws, they'll lose trust they have built with the immigrant community.
