Health Department Gets Complaints About Condom Wrappers

Hundreds of thousands of condoms provided for free by the city are proving unpopular with their potential users.
Complaints have arisen about the condoms' wrappers, which are paper and not plastic or foil like condoms sold in stores.
A coalition of groups that give out the condoms to help combat HIV infections even sent back 10,000 to the city - about 15 percent of what the city says has been distributed.
The condoms were introduced earlier this year.
They come in a yellow and purple wrapper.
From the start, the wrappers raised eyebrows with the slogan "Coming Together in D.C. to Stop HIV."
But organizations that distribute the condoms say that people complain the wrappers seem shoddy - even ripping in purses or bursting in pockets.
They say demand has dropped drastically at two distribution sites in southeast D.C. Health department officials say they don't think there's a problem with the nearly 650,000 condoms they've given out, and that they haven't received any substantive complaints.
