Maryland Lawmakers to Wrap Up Health Care Study

Maryland lawmakers are almost done taking a look at ways to improve health care coverage.
A commission of lawmakers looking at health proposals wraps up work Thursday, with both House and Senate members looking at proposals to reduce the number of uninsured Marylanders.
Last year, the House passed a bill to raise the state tobacco tax by a dollar a pack to pay for a Medicaid expansion. But that plan failed in the Senate. Lawmakers working on the health commission are expected to propose a course of action on the problem for next year.
However, the health care debate is tied up in a larger budget debate. That's because all the proposed fixes to Maryland's health care system are expected to be very expensive - and Maryland already faces a projected deficit next year of up to $1.5 billion.
