Virginia Tech Victims' Families Hire Law Firm
posted 12:16 pm Thu September 06, 2007 - Richmond, VA
A prominent personal injury lawyer in Washington, D.C. says the families of seven students killed in the Virginia Tech shootings have hired his firm to represent them in possible wrongful death lawsuits against the state. No lawsuits have been filed yet. Peter Grenier told The Associated Press Thursday that the lawsuits generally are expected to claim negligence and federal civil rights violations.

Grenier said the report by the governor's panel that investigated the shootings supports negligence claims.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?Because Virginia Tech is a public university, any lawsuit would name the Commonwealth of Virginia as the defendant.

The state is largely protected from civil lawsuits by "sovereign immunity."

The General Assembly passed the Tort Claims Act, which limits damages at $100,000 for bodily injury caused by the state's negligence.

But Grenier has twice has obtained larger settlements from the state.

Attorney General Bob McDonnell had no comment.

He would represent the state in any lawsuits stemming from the Tech shootings.

If the families want to sue someone, why don't they sue the family of the animal who did the shooting? They, more they anyone, more than the school or anyone else, knew this young man had mental problems.
