O'Malley: Higher, Broader Sales Tax Likely
posted 5:27 am Fri September 07, 2007 - Baltimore, MD.
Governor Martin O'Malley expects a higher and broader sales tax will be needed to cover part of the state's projected budget shortfall.
Although he isn't giving the specifics, he said in an interview Thursday on WYPR-FM that the tax will likely increase and be expanded to cover services that are now excluded.
State Senate President Thomas "Mike" Miller says he agrees with O'Malley on the sales tax.
Past efforts to apply to tax to those services have been defeated by strong lobbying efforts in the state capital.
