O'Malley: New Commissioner Will Fight for Consumers
posted 5:33 am Fri September 07, 2007 - Annapolis, MD.
Saying that consumers need help dealing with powerful insurance companies, Governor Martin O'Malley has named his chief legal counsel as insurance commissioner.
O'Malley says Ralph Tyler will have "the backbone ... to stand up for the working people of this state" as insurance commissioner.
Tyler does not have an insurance industry background, unlike insurance commissioners appointed by former governors.
The job requires regulating the state's insurers.
Before serving as O'Malley's legal counsel, Tyler was a Baltimore solicitor and a deputy attorney general.
The governor said he wanted Tyler "to stand up to wealthy powerful interests" and said the appointment marks a shift toward consumer advocacy.
