A national law enforcement organization has named an off-duty Secret Service agent officer of the month for his intervention in an Annapolis mall shooting.
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund named special agent Paul Buta officer of the month for September Thursday.
Buta is credited by police with ending a fight between teenagers that left him with a gunshot wound and a teen with a gunshot wound in the leg.
The man who shot Buta is charged with attempted first-degree murder.
Buta was shot once in the hip and suffered a broken femur.
He has since returned to duty.
Fund officials say he is the first Secret Service officer to receive this award.
He has also received awards from the Anne Arundel County Police Department and the Secret Service.
