D.C. Officials Hope to Spend Surplus Money on Education

The D.C. government is in line for a tax windfall of at least $100 million.
Chief Financial Officer Natwar Gandhi says the city is still benefiting from higher real estate assessments in the early part of the decade.
Although the market has cooled in the past two years, Gandhi says collections usually take a year or two to catch up to market trends.
The council must approve spending of the surplus.
Officials with Mayor Adrian Fenty's administration say they will seek more money for the school system, including severance packages to hundreds of central office employees.
The mayor also wants to expand job programs for youths and former criminal offenders and repave streets and alleys.
D.C. Council Member Kwame Brown says besides schools, money should go to public safety and vocational education.
Council members Jack Evans and Phil Mendelson say they believe the money should be used to pay down the city's debt.
