Comcast Cuts Off High-Volume Internet Users
posted 6:53 am Fri September 07, 2007 - Washington
Some cable customers who use the Internet a lot are finding themselves without service.
Comcast has cut off the Internet service of some high-bandwidth users, saying they hog Internet capacity and slow down the network for other customers.
So far, only Comcast customers have been cut off.
The company says only a small fraction have been disconnected for using too much bandwidth, but it won't reveal its limits.
Analysts say such caps could become more common.
Cable companies are facing tough competition in the high-speed Internet market.
AT&T and Verizon are installing new cables capable of carrying more Internet traffic.
While hundreds of subscribers often share a cable Internet connection, Phone lines are run directly to each home, so a single bandwidth hog will not slow other connections.
