D.C. Schools Loses a Dozen Teachers Due to Visa Lapse
   posted 9:09 am Fri September 07, 2007 - Washington
D.C. schools have lost a dozen Spanish immersion teachers after the school system allowed a contract with a company that processes their visas to expire. The contract the school system has with the New York-based International Institute of Education expired July 31 and school officials found out too late to renew it.

Some teachers resigned, and others haven't yet received the clearances to fly into the United States.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion? Some Spanish-immersion classes are going on with only aides supervising students.

Schools spokeswoman Mafara Hobson says Chancellor Michelle Rhee hopes to correct the mistake and that the system is working to renew the contract.
