Taxi Zone Fare System Could Be Replaced

That confusing zone system for calculating taxi fares in the district could soon be a thing of the past, depending on how the D.C. Taxicab Commission votes. The commission will vote Tuesday on whether to recommend to Mayor Adrian Fenty that the city stick with zones, even though they have a survey showing widespread discontent, or switch to meters like every other major U.S. city.
But it may not be so simple. A third option may emerge, which involves a zone-fare calculator. A new device would calculate fares based on the existing zones. Then a rider would get a detailed receipt on how it was calculated.
About 300 Yellow Cabs in the district got zone meter devices in the past year.
The current way of calculating fares has turned into a touchy subject among lawmakers, and a source of complaints and frustration among tourists and residents alike.
