Metrobus Driver Pleads Guilty in Deadly Pedestrian Crash

The Metrobus driver who hit and killed two pedestrians on Valentine's Day this year pleaded guilty Friday, and 7 On Your Side obtained surveillance video of the collision.
Fifty-four-year-old Victor Kolako pleaded guilty to two counts of negligent vehicular homicide in D.C. Superior Court. Under the plea agreement, prosecutors dropped more serious charges of involuntary manslaughter.
The judge accepted the plea, telling Kolako that a reasonable bus driver, exercising "ordinary care," should have yielded to the pedestrians.
The collision happened as Kolako made a left-hand turn onto Pennsylvania Avenue from Seventh Street.
The investigation found that the victims, 59-year-old Martha Schoenborn and 54-year-old Sally McGhee, were in the crosswalk while the walk signal was illuminated and had the right-of-way.
Prosecutors said one witness, a driver, told them he had to slam on his brakes to avoid hitting the bus as it turned in front of him. The driver, according to prosecutors, would have testified Kolako had his eyes on him and not on the pedestrians.
Prosecutors have agreed to request a three-year prison sentence for the driver, but the judge could give Kolako up to ten years behind bars.
