Effi Barry To Lie In Repose In Wilson Building
posted 10:53 pm Fri September 07, 2007 - Washington
The city is doing a little extra to allow the public to remember former Washington first lady Effi Barry, who died of acute myeloid leukemia.
Barry's body will lie in repose next week in the Wilson Building. It's an honor generally reserved for elected officials, but Mayor Adrian Fenty said it was a fitting tribute for the woman who worked to make D.C. a better place.
The 63-year-old is the ex-wife of councilman and former mayor Marion Barry who stood by him through his drug problems while he was mayor.
Viewings are scheduled for 10 a.m. to midnight on Thursday and 6 to 9 a.m. on Friday.
Barry's funeral will then be at 11 a.m. at the National Cathedral.
Fenty plans for the city to absorb all costs relating to her viewing. He will also proclaim Friday as Effi Barry Day.
