Maryland Officials Want Army Aid for BRAC Road Upgrades
posted 4:55 am Tue September 11, 2007 - Annapolis, MD
State and local governments want the Army to share some of the costs of road and transit improvements that state officials say will be needed as new private office and research complexes are built inside two bases.
The Army is negotiating the lease of land at Fort Meade and Aberdeen Proving Ground to private developers. Because the land is federally owned, the developers would not pay property taxes and impact fees that could offset the cost of transportation upgrades.
State Transportation Secretary John Porcari says planners are predicting significant increases in traffic on state roads and transit lines serving Fort Meade.
A nationwide military base realignment is expected to bring as many as 60,000 jobs and 28,000 households to Maryland. Most will be around Fort Meade and Aberdeen.
