Washington County to Buy Building for Jail Expansion
posted 6:15 am Wed September 12, 2007 - Hagerstown, MD
The Washington County commissioners have approved a building purchase that will allow them to expand the county jail.
The county will spend $5 million for the former Phoenix Color building on Tandy Drive near the jail.
Sheriff Douglas Mullendore wants to connect the two buildings, saying it will be cheaper than buying land and constructing a new building. The current detention center is designed for 330 men and 71 women and is over capacity.
The Phoenix Color building was built in 1992.
