A Rockville mother is taking the Montgomery County School District to court saying teachers and school officials knew about her son's drug addiction and didn't tell her about it.

Marie Mauel says she came very close to losing her 15-year-old son, last fall after a health teacher and a guidance counselor allegedly never told her that he had a drug problem. In a draft for his IB health class at Einstein High School last year, Marie's son wrote that he "would like to quit drug abuse," and asks his teacher to try to get him to stop. The teacher allegedly referred the student to the school's guidance counselor, but according to the suit, no one else was told. After the student's grades plummeted, his mother met with the counselor last January.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?Marie said the counselor told her that "she didn't see any problem, she told us that (he) was college-bound," and made no mention of any drug use. Later, in March, her son wound up hospitalized after a failed suicide attempt.

That's when his parents claim they first found out their son was using pot, crystal meth, and other drugs. School officials have declining comment on the pending lawsuit but cited regulations saying, "the decision to involve parents should be arrived at jointly by the student and educator unless in the judgment of the educator, the mental or physical health of the student is immediately and dangerously threatened by drug or alcohol use."

The Mauel family is seeking $200,000 in damages and their son is attending a new school. They say the purpose of this lawsuit is to prevent anyone else to go through what they did.

mythoughts
i dont think it is the school's fault. however, i do think the guidance counselor should have alerted the parents ust for the betterment of the child. They should not be sued because they didnt. the school is not liable for their son's already drug addiction and i am sorry but, as parents we have to be responsible for our kids. guess what - if that means you have to spy, snoop, follow, question, or whatever on your child, then guesswhat, you have to do it. it is the parent's responsibility to know what is going on with his or her child.. .and yeah holtonb is not a perfect world, but we need to do better as parents and as a community with raising these kids.. speak up,,,, say something if you know something...and employers need to be involved with this as well and allow parents time to handle these matters. the county should not be sued because they are not to blame for the addiction or the suicide.. most likely the child would have tried it anyway becasue the problem had already existed... teachers... get involved and CARE.. Parents,,, keep up with your child cause the drug problem has probably been festering and YOU didnt notice your child changing right before your eyes.. sue yourself!
