More Students Using 'Study Drugs'

Emergency Rooms across the county are witnessing a disturbing trend where more students are being admitted for using "study drugs."
Doctors say they are seeing more teenagers and young adults suffering from elevated heart rates and other side effects from taking prescription stimulants like Adderall, Ritalin, and Concerta.
Health officials say students are illegally buying these prescription pills from fellow students and taking the "study drugs" to help them focus, often keeping them awake for days. Recently in Connecticut, three students reportedly overdosed on Adderall and out west, 11 students were hospitalized after taking too much Ritalin in California.
Doctor Nora Volkow warn that "when used inappropriately, these drugs can actually lead to an addiction." Volkow went on to say, "Some kids take the tablets and crush them and then they snort them. Or some inject them."
Volkow says the misuse of "study drugs" can cause serious heart problems that are especially dangerous when combined with alcohol or other medications.
