Council Tours Troubled Hospital
   posted 10:33 am Sat September 22, 2007 - WASHINGTON
Doctors at Greater Southeast Community Hospital say it remains at risk of collapse. The doctors spoke to D.C. Council members as the council toured the hospital on Friday. A New England-based company has promised to buy the hospital, if the city puts in $79 million. Meanwhile, administrators are struggling to maintain services and staffing.

The field trip was led by health committee chairman David Catania. He says the plan for Envision Hospital Corporation to sell Greater Southeast to Specialty Hospitals of America is the last hope. Mayor Adrian Fenty also supports the deal.

Wowzer
The city cannot afford to lose another hospital. Given that the hospitals are required by law to take indigent or uninsured emergency patients, it seems appropriate that tax dollars support the mission.

I'm not one for government bailouts ordinarily but providing emergency health care to the needy seems the right thing to do.
