Explosion Destroys Adelphi Home

The Adelphi couple who escaped the explosion that destroyed their home demanded answers on Monday about what led to the blast.
Washington Gas had been called to the 1500 block of Quinwood Street about a half-hour before the Saturday night explosion because of the smell of gas. The utility says a technician arrived about 9:44 p.m. and left after detecting nothing out of the ordinary. Neighbors say the technician blamed the odor on gasoline spilled on the street.
"He left and 20 minutes later my house explodes," said homeowner Brenda Pannebecker. "Please explain to me how that can take place."
Pannebecker and her husband were inside the home when it exploded. Both escaped uninjured. The house was destroyed by the blast and the following fire. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries while putting out the blaze.
Fire investigators are focusing on the gas meter on the side of the Pannebecker's home. They believe a gas leak allowed gas to build up in the family's basement.
A Washington Gas spokesperson said the utility did not find a leak in a portion of the line for which the company is responsible.
On Monday, utility workers began replacing old gas meters mounted inside homes with exterior units.
A Washington Gas spokesman says the work, though prompted by the explosion, is not connected to it.
Brenda Pannebecker doesn't buy it.
"Now that my house is in shreds, they're going up and down the street replacing meters," she said.
