About 17,000 Sign Up for Virginia Tech Text Alerts
posted 6:49 pm Sun September 23, 2007 - BLACKSBURG, Va.
About 17,000 people have signed up for a new system at Virginia Tech to notify students and staff of emergencies. The alerts are sent by e-mail, text messages and online instant messages.

But the mother of one of the students injured in the April shootings there questioned university president Charles Steger Sunday about who would decide when alerts were issued.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion? At a meeting of the school's board of visitors Sunday, Steger said he would usually make that decision. Diane Strollo said after the meeting that "you still have human error."

Strollo drove six hours from her home in Pittsburgh. She says she attended the meeting because she wanted to hear firsthand what university officials were doing to increase security. Her daughter Hilary has returned to school.

Steger says alert system is one of a number of steps already taken to make the Blacksburg campus safer.

Too many would be like the boy yelling wolf. No one can be 100% sure they or their family is safe and secure no matter where they are. But we must have faith and go on as normal as possible.
