Nationals Exercise Acta's Option for 2009

The Washington Nationals exercised the 2009 option on manager Manny Acta's contract Friday. The 38-year-old Acta, the youngest skipper in the major leagues, has led the Nationals to a 72-87 record going into the final weekend against the Phillies.
"It gives you peace of mind," Acta said. "It's very meaningful to me."
Acta agreed to a two-year contract with two one-year club options last November to become the second manager in team history. He replaced Frank Robinson.
"Manny's ability to lead as well as his infectious optimism and attention to detail is impressive," general manager Jim Bowden said. "I feel the Nationals' future is in good hands with one of the best young managers in baseball."
The Nationals were a consensus preseason pick to finish last in the NL East. They lost their two top hitters Alfonso Soriano (free agency) and Nick Johnson (injury) from last season, and had a patchwork pitching staff.
But Washington has stayed competitive and is three games ahead of last-place Florida in the division with three games left. The Nationals swept a three-game series from the first-place Mets at Shea Stadium earlier in the week.
