D.C. Region Produces More CO2 than Many Countries
posted 10:41 am Sun September 30, 2007 - WASHINGTON
A new study of pollution in the Washington region says the area produces more carbon dioxide than several medium-size European countries.
The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments came up with the estimate. The group says more than 65 million metric tons of carbon dioxide were emitted here in 2005. That's more than was emitted by all of Hungary, Finland, Sweden, Denmark or Switzerland - each of which has more people than the D.C. region.
Officials blame the high carbon dioxide levels on the region's crawling traffic and coal-fired power plants.

The estimate shows that the Maryland suburbs produce more carbon dioxide than either the Virginia suburbs or the District. One major reason is that it's home to three coal-burning power plants.
