The Washington Nationals recalled outfielder Roger Bernadina and first baseman/outfielder Kory Casto and purchased the contracts of three others from Triple-A Columbus on Monday.

The Nationals selected the contracts of left-handed pitcher Mike Hinckley and right-handed pitchers Shairon Martis and Levale Speigner.

Washington also activated shortstop Alberto Gonzalez from the 15-day disabled list. Gonzalez had been on the disabled list since August 5 due to a left hamstring strain.

The Nationals transferred outfielder Wily Mo Pena from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list. Pena was placed on the DL July 18 and underwent surgery on his left shoulder July 22. Also Monday, first baseman Dmitri Young started a rehab assignment with short-season Class-A Vermont. Young has been on the disabled list since July 12 to deal with problems stemming from his diabetes.

Washington also added Columbus' hitting coach Rick Eckstein, who was the third base coach for the bronze-medal winning USA Olympic baseball team, to the coaching staff.
