(Sports Network) - Fifth-seeded Italian Francesca Schiavone and ninth-seeded Chinese Shuai Peng were among Monday's first-round winners at the $225,000 Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic. Schiavone drilled Indonesian qualifier Sandy Gumulya 6-2, 6-0, while Peng pasted Japanese wild card Ayumi Morita 6-2, 6-1 on the hardcourts at the beautiful Grand Hyatt Bali. Peng became a seed this week when sixth-seeded fellow Chinese Na Li pulled out with a knee injury.

Up next for Schiavone will be Uzbekistan's Akgul Amanmuradova.

In other opening-round play, Austrian Tamira Paszek handled German wild card Anna-Lena Groenefeld 7-5, 6-4; Amanmuradova erased Indonesian qualifier Ayu Fani Damayanti 6-2, 6-1; Poland's Marta Domachowska dropped Indonesian lucky- loser Lavinia Tananta 6-2, 6-3; and Chinese Meng Yuan overcame wild card Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.

American Lindsay Davenport, who is not defending her title this week, beat Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova in last year's finale here. Hantuchova is this week's top seed, while Swiss Patty Schnyder is the second seed. Both players received byes into the round of 16. Schnyder will open up against the aforementioned Yuan.

The 2008 Bali champion will collect $35,000.
