(Sports Network) - The San Diego Chargers announced Tuesday that linebacker Shawne Merriman underwent successful surgery to repair two torn ligaments in his left knee.
The procedure to repair both the posterior cruciate ligament and lateral collateral ligament was performed by Dr. John Uribe and Dr. John Zvijac in Coral Gables, Florida.
The 24-year-old Merriman originally opted to play out the 2008 campaign despite numerous doctors advising him to have surgery. He was limited to one tackle and assisted on another in the Chargers' 26-24 season-opening loss to the Carolina Panthers. In addition, the NFL announced Monday that Merriman was fined $7,500 for a hit below the knees on Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme.

A Pro Bowl selection in each of his three seasons in the league, Merriman was placed on injured reserve September 10.
Taken 12th overall by the Chargers out of Maryland in 2005, Merriman has quickly distinguished himself as one of the best at his position, particularly on the pass rush. He has compiled 39 1/2 sacks in three seasons, including 12 1/2 in 2007.
