Volunteers have worked to clear mounds of trash from the Anacostia River this weekend.
Participants picked up garbage Saturday as part of the 23rd annual International Coastal Cleanup, a global cleanup effort sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy and other groups. Those in Washington found small items such as cigarette butts, and large objects such as a shopping cart and bicycle in the Anacostia River.
John Dunnigan is director of the National Ocean Service for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He helped in the Anacostia cleanup, and says he's seen trash wash into the ocean. He says volunteers come out because they believe they're making a difference.
