An anthrax test on a suspicious letter dropped off and opened in a mailroom at the Department of Veterans Affairs in downtown Washington has produced negative results.
Batallion Chief Crosswhite confirmed 10 people are being held waiting to be decontaminated after having contact with the suspicious letter. Officials, however, say this is a routine measure and no one has reported feeling sick.
D.C. fire department spokesman Alan Etter says a hazardous materials team is conducting environmental testing of the area, but nothing harmful has yet been found. Etter says the building has not been evacuated. More than a dozen emergency vehicles responded to the building, which is located near the White House.
Etter says firefighters were called to the scene about 11 a.m. after law enforcement officials determined the letter was a "credible threat."
