TEMPLE HILLS, Md. - Prince George's County police say a 14-year-old girl is in critical-but-stable condition after being hit by a car on Tuesday.

The girl was one of seven people taken to hospitals after the chain reaction crash. Only the 14-year-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries.

Officials say the girl was crossing the 3000 block of Brinkley Road in Temple Hills, Maryland, after 8 a.m. when she was hit by a beige Lincoln sedan.

It happened in front of her bus stop, which was crowded with fellow students.

"I was shocked. I couldn't believe I saw something like that, especially how high she was in the air," said Larry Walker, a witness.  "She flew in the air and landed on the sidewalk. So I ran over to her and put a jacket over her leg because she was shaking."

Crossland High School made crisis counselors available to students throughout the day. There was no question that many of the young people were shaken by what they'd witnessed.

"We didn't realize that the car was there," said Jonathan Hall. "We were just standing there talking and the car came out of nowhere and hit here."

After the teen was hit, authorities say, the vehicle then grazed another student in the elbow and collided with a minivan which had a father and three kids inside.

No one saw the beige Lincoln coming, ABC 7's Brad Bell reported, adding there were no signs of skidmarks or other attempts to stop until after the girl was hit and the vehicle struck a minivan, which was occupied by a mother and three small children.

"It was like right in front of the bus stop, because she was walking toward us to get to the other side when she got hit," said Tyrell Carr

"Whoever was in the car had to see her, because she was already in the street. She was already past the yellow line," added Joshua Hall, another witness.

Neighbors say students often cross the road at that location because there is no crosswalk for at least a quarter-mile in each direction. Engineers are expected to visit the scene Wednesday, and will examine to see if a crosswalk or flashing lights could be installed.

The striking vehicle remained on the scene.

The speed limit on Brinkley Road is 30 MPH.  This is why everyone who is impatiently driving behind me when I'm doing the speed limit needs to think twice before passing me or riding my bumper. I don't speed in residential areas, and especially in school zones. Maybe this child would have had a chance of crossing the road safely if the cars were not speeding
